Air-conditioning
1. Refrain from switching on air-conditioners before assembly. 2. Refrain from switching on air-conditioners when the temperature is 25°C or below. 3. Turn on air-conditioners only when the room is being used. 4. Refrain from routinely turning on air-conditioners. 5. Refrain from using air-conditioners in the J.C. Hall during assemblies in winter. 6. Open doors and windows for ventilation rather than using air-conditioners. 7. Minimize the use of air-conditioners in rooms where air-conditioning is essential e.g. computer rooms and multi-media rooms. Lighting 1. Refrain from switching on unnecessary lighting e.g. white board lights, external corridor lights. 2. Minimize lighting in classrooms during lunch breaks. 3. Endeavour to convert from incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps or tubes. Power 1. Ensure all electrical appliances are switched off when the classroom is not being used and at the end of the school day. 2. Ensure all electrical equipment, e.g. photocopiers, printers, and computers, in resource rooms and staffrooms is switched of at the end of the day, particularly over weekends and before public holidays. 3. Ensure laptop computers are switched off at the end of the day by setting timer. 4. Ensure no electrical appliance e.g. laptop computers, are not left in stand-by mode. 5. Ensure all computers in the computer rooms and multi-media rooms are not left in stand-by mode. Waste Management 1. Classify and recycle metal, paper and plastic waste. 2. Encourage the use of reusable drink containers, not packaged drinks. 3. Avoid the use of disposable containers and cutlery. 4. Encourage recycling through the provision of adequate recycling bins. 5. Promote recycling through assemblies and good example. Others 1. Inform parents via e-mail rather than through hard copies of school notices. 2. Reduce the use of virgin-pulp paper. 3. Substitute recycled paper for virgin pulp paper. 4. Use environmentally-friendly cleaning products where appropriate. 5. Encourage printing on both sides of a piece of paper. 6. Re-use one sided paper for printing drafts. 7. Replace toilet cisterns with full flush/half flush cisterns. |
